Systems of Equations: Choosing Phone A or B?

ALGEBR-DW1LPN

Jaylen is the market for cell phones. He is graduating from high school and will be forced to pay his own phone bill. He is trying to decide which phone company to go with.

Phone company A charges a monthly fee of \$30 per line and an additional \$10 for each gig of data used. Phone company B charges a monthly fee of \$40 per line and an additional charge of \$15 per 2 gigs of data.

If he plans on using 4 gigs of data, he needs to decide which would be the better deal for him.

Write and solve two equations to show the total cost and decide which cell phone would be the better deal.

A

Phone A: $10x + 30$ Cost: \$70
Phone B: $15x + 40$ Cost: \$100

Phone A is the better deal.

B

Phone A: $10x + 30$ Cost: \$70
Phone B: $7.5x + 40$ Cost: \$70

Both would cost the same.

C

Phone A: $10x + 30$ Cost: \$70
Phone B: $7.5x + 30$ Cost: \$60

Phone B is the better deal.

D

Phone A: $30x + 10$ Cost: \$130
Phone B: $40x + 15$ Cost: \$175

Phone A is the better deal.
