BLAST Sequence Comparison

Students use the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) to compare the DNA sequences of Human Ubiquitin C and Keratin genes to the baboon, chimpanzee, macaque, and mouse version of the genes. The Ubiquitin C gene codes for a protein associated with DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, and various cell signaling pathways. Keratin is a structural protein in epithelial cells.

The students record the percent identical to the human gene for each organism. The data is represented in the graph.
