Large complex compounds called ligands that contain two or more donor atoms are also known as chelating agents (from the Greek word "chele": to claw). These compounds can be used to bond metals in nature in order to capture and remove the metal from biological systems. The greater the number of donor atoms, the stronger the chelating agent.
