Endangered Species: Zoos

APES-YRKDKF

Zoos have been a source of intrigue and entertainment to people around the world for more than 2,000 years. Controversy often surrounds zoos for illegal acquisition, inadequate facilities, and poor treatment of animals. However, zoos are also important to the survival of endangered species. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is an international network of zoos and aquariums that participate in species survival plans and captive breeding programs.

Many times it takes the AZA years to find a suitable mate within its network for an animal in the captive breeding program.

All of the following statements are reasons for this long-term search for a suitable mate EXCEPT

A

animals must reach sexual maturity.

B

animals must respond to mating rituals.

C

it takes time for animals to be caught and traded from the wild.

D

researchers must achieve the maximum genetic diversity.

E

many provisions must be made for the stability, transfer, and space requirements for animals.
