Hygd's offer

beowulf-4EY06S

After Ecgtheow's death, his wife Hygd offers the throne to Beowulf rather than her son. The poet uses this instance to prove Beowulf's worth as a leader. Whether he knew it or not, the poet also suggests:

A

That Hygd acted beyond her sphere.

B

That Hygd did not understand the role of kingship.

C

That Hygd had the ability to do this.

D

That Hygd was justified in doing this.

E

That Hygd was a poor mother.
