Fatty Acid Oxidation: Determining Products

BIOCHM-HJWBW9

Saturated fatty acids such as stearic acid (C18:0) are first converted to their fatty acyl-CoA form and then metabolized through the four steps of the first stage of mitochondrial β-oxidation. Examine the simplified/partial β-oxidation schematic for a generic fatty acyl-CoA shown below.

Identify ALL of the following which would be direct products of β-oxidation of stearoyl-CoA after 2 passes through β-oxidation.

A

Myristoyl-CoA (note, myristic acid = C14:0)

B

Acetyl-CoA

C

Coenzyme A (CoA)

D

Palmitic acid (C16:0)

E

Palmitoyl-CoA (note, palmitic acid = C16:0)

F

Propionyl-CoA

G

Fatty acyl-CoA

H

NADH
