Difficult

Functionality of the Gram Stain

BIOCHM-112FXH

You are developing a therapeutic molecule that de-stabilizes the peptidoglycan layer of microorganisms. Due to clinical requirements, the therapeutic has to be charged and polar in nature so it does not pass through a lipid bilayer.

Based on your knowledge of the Gram Stain, you are provided with a mixed culture to test the effectiveness of the therapeutic. In the control (untreated mix culture), you perform the Gram stain procedure and as expected, you see red and blue/violet cells under the microscope.

Assuming the therapeutic is effective, what is the expected outcome with the TREATED mix culture of microbes (i.e. you add your therapeutic to the mixed culture)?

A

The microscopy analysis should show JUST red stained cells.

B

The microscopy analysis should show JUST purple stained cells.

C

The microscopy analysis should show A MIX of red and blue/violet stained cells (same as the control).

D

The microscopy analysis should show A MIX of red stained and lightly-stained red or nearly transparent cells.
