Leukotriene Synthesis: Mixed Function Oxygenase

BIOCHM-JKUK46

The synthesis of leukotrienes begins with the addition of O$_{2}$ to arachidonic acid by the class of enzymes known as lipoxygenases. A lipoxygenase is also known as a mixed function oxygenase.

What is meant by "mixed function" as it relates to oxygenases?

A

A mixed function oxygenase can act as either a mono- or dioxygenase, adding one or two oxygen atoms to the substrate.

B

A mixed function oxygenase can generate multiple products, including peroxides, ketones, and alcohols.

C

A mixed function oxygenase can both add or remove oxygen atoms from a substrate; it has both oxidative and reductive capabilities.

D

A mixed function oxygenase can add oxygen atoms to a variable position on the substrate, generating products that differ in the carbon that has been oxidized.

E

A mixed function oxygenase can add oxygen atoms to multiple positions of the same substrate simultaneously, generating a product with multiple oxidized carbons.
