Cellular Fiber Characteristics

CELLS-HPIR72

The cytoskeleton of cells is composed of three different types of fibers: microfilaments (actin), intermediate filaments, and microtubules.

Each fiber type is produced by the polymerization of individual protein components and has different degrees of flexibility. Each type may or may not demonstrate polarity (a plus and minus end) and treadmilling (steady-state polymerization and depolymerization at each end).

Of the three fiber types, which ONE type is the most flexible, but lacks polarity and treadmilling?

A

Actin.

B

Intermediate filaments.

C

Tubulin.
