The cytoskeleton of animal cells is made up of three types of cytoskeletal elements: microtubules, intermediate filaments, and actin microfilaments. Normal cellular activity is dependent upon the cytoskeleton for intracellular transport, locomotion, and cell division.

In addition, the cytoskeleton is viewed as very dynamic, as these polymers undergo polymerization or depolymerization based on the needs of the cell.
