The Philadelphia Chromosome

CELLS-RSQOYL

Chronic myelogenous leukemia was found to be associated with the Philadelphia chromosome which arises from alterations in chromosomes 9 and 22. The resultant gene encodes for a BCR-ABL protein kinase, which phosphorylates proteins not normally phosphorylated by the wild-type ABL kinase.

What type of structural genetic alteration would give rise to this mutated gene?

A

Amplification.

B

Deletion.

C

Point mutation.

D

Translocation.
