Shear Compression


Structural steel has a shear modulus of $79.3 \cdot 10^9\,Pa$. Aluminum has a Young's modulus of $69\cdot 10^9\,Pa$. A horizontal aluminum rod, 1 m in length and 1 cm in diameter, is in contact with a vertical steel rod, 2 m in length and 2 cm in diameter. The steel rod is rigidly connected at its base.$\,\,$ A piston in contact with the left end of the aluminum rod moves $\,$1 cm to the right.

In order for the aluminum rod to move, it must move the end of the steel rod. How far does the end of the steel rod move to the right?
