Spring Constant: Stress - strain Equation

CLMECH-ANECO1

Hook's law, $F=-k\,\Delta x$, describes the force exerted by a spring in terms of the spring constant, $k$ and how much the spring is stretched or compressed, $\Delta x$. Using the stress - strain equation, express the spring constant in terms of:

  • Young's modulus, $Y$
  • the unstretched length of the spring, $L$
  • the cross-sectional area of the wire that is coiled to make the spring, $A$
A

$\cfrac{Y\,L}{A}$

B

$\cfrac{A\,L}{Y}$

C

$\cfrac{YA}{L}$

D

$Y\,A\,L$
