The Energy of the Earth’s Atmospheric Electric Field

A large electric potential of approximately 300,000 Volts exists between the surface of the Earth and the upper atmosphere. Assume that the upper limit of the electric field lies 40 km above the surface of the Earth. Take the Earth’s radius to be 6,370 km and assume you can treat the Earth and its upper atmosphere as a spherical capacitor.
