Use of Non-Traditional Matings to Identify Genetic Recessives

GENES-I1HVEL

In many livestock species information about particular mating results can provide insights into genetic recessive conditions.

The principles of inheritance can be used to determine the probability of detection for genetic carriers, and this may be the only type of genetic inference in a species that has not had its genome sequence determined.

For instance, a male parent may be bred to some of his own daughters, and the phenotypes of the resulting offspring can be evaluated.

If a male parent that is heterozygous for a very rare recessive allele is mated to one of his daughters, what is the chance that a single offspring will be phenotypically dominant?

A

25%

B

50%

C

75%

D

87.5%
