UVA Reading Study

GMAT-4NCTJL

Recently, the University of Virginia completed a six-month study on reading levels in public schools. They found that in three counties, female fifth-graders outperformed male fifth graders in reading comprehension assessments by two grade levels. An earlier study that examined the reading levels of high school sophomores in East Tennessee found an average of one and a half grade level difference two years prior. Researchers concluded that women are better at reading than men. Howard Dean, the head researcher at UVA, did warn that other factors, like empathetic response, might be involved. A new reading initiative focused on low-performing male students was proposed by the Virginia Department of Education in response.
