Zika Virus Control and Prevention Issues

GMAT-MXDN3O

With the recent outbreak of a mosquito-borne disease called Zika, community governments have embarked on new efforts to control mosquito populations in at-risk areas of the United States. While the recent outbreak was initially detected in Brazil, Zika is also found in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, various U.S. territories, and other countries in South and Central America. As of spring of 2016, the outbreak has yet to reach the continental United States, but experts anticipate its arrival as temperatures rise and mosquito populations multiply. Despite increased funding for pest control programs, many state and local officials and disease control experts are concerned that the potential disaster may not be preventable.

Which of the following statements LEAST supports the officials' and experts' concerns?

A

Most pest control funding is supported by local taxpayer dollars.

B

Increased funding from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) will not reach states until August, at the earliest.

C

The type of mosquito known to carry the Zika virus is estimated to be present in at least 27 states.

D

E

The type of mosquito known to carry the Zika virus lives in and around houses and breeds in tiny containers of water.
