Hamlet Feigns Madness

HAMLET-FEVOOP

When Hamlet encounters Polonius, he pretends not to recognize him (responding to Polonius’s question, “Do you know me, my lord?” with “Excellent well; you are a fishmonger”), then suddenly asks him if he has a daughter and warns him to keep her out of view.

Although Hamlet is clearly feigning madness, what message is he trying to convey to Polonius?

A

That he is in love with Ophelia but cannot be trusted to treat her well.

B

That Ophelia is an untrustworthy and hurtful person.

C

That he (Hamlet) is a misogynist who believes that women should not move freely in public.

D

That he suspects that Polonius is behind Ophelia’s sudden breakup with him.

E

That he feels rejected by Ophelia and is, in fact, mad for her love.
