Ophelia's Personality

HAMLET-NUKEO5

Before returning to France, Laertes counsels Ophelia to proceed carefully with Hamlet because, although he may care for her, he cannot marry whom he chooses, since, as a royal, his will is not his own.

He tells her to remain chaste and she responds that she will, but that he should reck his own rede rather than behave like an ungracious pastor and how her the steep and thorny way to heaven whiles, like a puff'd and reckless libertine, himself the primrose path of dalliance treads.

What does Ophelia’s response reveal about her?

A

She is a solemn and pious girl who is concerned with morality and correctness of behavior.

B

She is a smart girl who knows her brother well and can joke with him about his indiscretions.

C

She is a simple and agreeable girl who seeks the advice of others to determine her own course of action.

D

She is a troubled girl who shows early signs of madness through her cheeky remarks to her brother.

E

She is a naive girl who knows very little about men and their lusty behaviors.
