# "Exterminate Them All" in Heart of Darkness

HRTDRK-2WMPYE

In Part Two, Marlow discovers Kurtz's report sanctioned by the International Society for the Suppression of Savages. This report began with the following:

the argument that we whites... 'must necessarily appear to them [savages] in the nature of supernatural beings- we approach them with the might as of a deity,'... 'By simple exercise of our will we can exert a power for good practically unbounded'

However, at the end of the pamphlet, Marlow viewed a postscript which read "Exterminate all the brutes!" Marlow notes the following of the postscript:

'He [Kurtz] had apparently forgotten all about that valuable postrscriptum, because, later on, when he in a sense came to himself, he repeatedly entreated me to take good care of "my pamphlet" (he called it), as it was sure to have a good influence upon his career.

What does this postscript reveal?

A

That Kurtz understood that he had chosen a life from which he would not return.

B

That Kurtz realized that the Europeans and the natives were not so different in their shared brutality.

C

That Kurtz realized he had chosen an uncivilized life.

D

That Kurtz realized his attempts to civilize the natives were fruitless.

E

That Kurtz's only recourse for maintaining his sanity was to kill the natives since he had become more native than civilized.
