The Author's Preface

JNEYR-KJD1EY

In the preface to the second edition of Jane Eyre, Brontë writes:

Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack the first is not to assail the last. To pluck the mask from the face of the Pharisee, is not to lift an impious hand to the Crown of Thorns.

This quotation sets the tone for the novel as a whole. The author's words here present the claim that

A

new concepts, even shocking ones, aren't automatically sinful.

B

she is depicting life in an authentic manner, so readers shouldn't be shocked by this material.

C

readers shouldn't get so caught up in morality in works of fiction.

D

a writer's job is to present her readers with a moral code to follow.

E

she does not necessarily agree with the morality she presents in her own novel.
