Below is an extraction protocol that uses aqueous acid or aqueous base and an organic solvent such as hexane. Three compounds, toluene, benzoic acid and aniline, were mixed together at the beginning and then separated using this procedure.

Anyplace where arrows split indicates that organic solvent was added, mixed in a separatory funnel with the aqueous solution and then the aqueous and organic layers were separated.
