Infrared: Forensic Identification of Ephedrine and Derivatives

Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and their derivatives such as amphetamine and methamphetamine, are often encountered by forensic scientists during clandestine drug operations. One of the instruments used to analyze such samples is gas chromatography coupled with infrared spectrometry (GC/IRD). The gas phase IR of one such compound is shown below.
