Base-Catalyzed Dehydration in Aldol Condensation

The final event in the aldol condensation reaction at higher temperatures is a base-catalyzed dehydration process. Dehydration processes are usually catalyzed by acid.

At higher temperatures the beta-hydroxy carbonyl compounds initially obtained through the aldol condensation can undergo base-catalyzed hydration.

The mechanism involves deprotonation of an alpha-hydrogen followed by the loss of a hydroxide ion in the second step to afford the alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound.
