Convention Absentees

Why did the state of Rhode Island and potential delegate Patrick Henry of Virginia both reject invitations to attend and participate in the Constitutional Convention?

It was rumored that Alexander Hamilton and others wanted to create a constitutional monarchy like that of the hated English.

They believed that the new government would lead to states competing with each other for trade and western land claims.

They felt the delegates would create a government that would give too much power to the federal government at the expense of states' rights, and were satisfied with the status quo.

They disliked the idea of creating a system of federal courts.

They thought the Constitutional Convention would degenerate into squabbling, accomplish nothing, and waste everyone's time and effort.
