The 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Vice-President Al Gore was one of the closest (and controversial) elections in American history with the final winner being named on December 12th, over a month after the general election.

How was this close election decided?

A

Due to a ballot misprint, the state of Florida discarded the November election results and held a new election on the first Monday of December that year.

Bush was awarded the presidency since his party, the Republicans, controlled both houses of Congress at the time.

The Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader met with their respective caucuses and voted wherein Bush received most of those votes.

The Supreme Court ruled in Bush v. Gore that the Florida vote recount was unconstitutional and that Bush had won Florida's electoral votes.
