Dreads Locked Out
A 7-year-old girl named Tiana Parker was called to the principle’s office at the Deborah Brown Community School in
Oklahoma, and had been told that her dreadlocks were against school policy. The school board president explained
that the policy forbid dreadlocks, Afros and other hairstyles due to health and safety concerns. According to Tiana’s
mother called the school to ask what Tiana’s hairstyle had to do with her education, an administrator said, “Well, it’s
in the policy.” though Tiana had worn her hair the same way the previous school year.
The story of Tiana’s dreadlocks went viral, her story appeared in the news on Associated Press, Huffington Post and
even a broadcast news station. In a video interview, when asked why she was so sad, a teary-eyed Tiana replied,
“They didn’t like my dreads.” Tiana’s mother had explained to her when she first got her hair done in the tiny
dreadlocks that if she ever wanted to change the hairstyle, she’d have to have them cut off. So, when the school have
told her she had to change her (9) hairstyle, she thought she would have to shave her head. “The school didn’t even allow
us to, as parents, explain the situation to her.”
After she was enrolled in a new school, where she and her dreadlocks has been “welcomed with open arms,” the media
storm created by her plight has caused the school board to change it’s policy on hairstyles, leaving the students and
parents responsible for “personal hygiene.”
