The most common type of mining today is surface mining. One type of surface mining, strip mining, involves removing overburden in order to get to the mineral being mined (coal, in this case).

What is overburden?

Peat and low-quality coal.

Sulfur and mercury which are often found with coal.

Soil and rock that are on top of the coal.

Native grasses.

Houses and other buildings constructed above the coal seam.
