Very small hydroelectric systems can be used to supply power to remote areas with small populations, such as a research station. These systems are called picohydro (named after the metric prefix pico, meaning ${10}^{-12}$).

Consider a research station in the planning stage. Decisions are being made about the structure and use of the picohydro system. The system being built can produce electricity at a rate of 5 kilowatts. The majority of this power will be used for lighting the buildings. The researchers are choosing between 100W incandescent bulbs and 8W LED bulbs.
