Apoptosis is a normal part of cellular life. However it can be potentially damaging to neighboring cells.

Why might this be so?

The release of enzymes from lysosomes in the dying cell may damage neighboring cells.

The release of ATP energy may increase the metabolic activity of neighboring cells.

Cell surface receptors from the dying cell may fuse with the cell membranes of neighboring cells and affect the overall function of those cells.

Neighboring cells may take up foreign genetic material and manufacture defective proteins.
