Neurons are unique in that they possess long axons that transmit signals to the postsynaptic cells. The synapse is the site at which the cells communicate.

Because of the long distance from the neuronal cell body to the axon terminal (synaptic site), a mechanism is needed to transport important organelles such as mitochondria and synaptic vesicles to the synapse.

The means by which these organelles travel to the axonal terminal is called axonal transport.

There are two important proteins involved in anterograde transport, i.e. transport toward the axon terminal: the molecular motor,
