Riboswitches are short nucleotide sequences located within the 5’ untranslated regions of mRNAs.

They can regulate transcription elongation and translation initiation by sensing the presence of various metabolites whose binding to RNA results in the stabilization of an alternative structure of RNA. Riboswitches have been found in fungi and plants but are most common in bacteria.

In a plant cell, in which cellular compartment would you expect to observe riboswitch regulation of transcription elongation?

A

Rough endoplasmic reticulum.

B

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

C

Chloroplast.

D

Nucleus.

E

Golgi apparatus.
