Cancer can be viewed as a genetic disorder, with tumor suppressor genes acting recessively and oncogenes acting dominantly. The retinoblastoma gene RB was the first tumor suppressor gene discovered, and mutations in this gene occur sporadically in the population. Retinal tumors develop after both copies of RB are altered or eliminated.
