The endosymbiotic theory suggests that aerobic bacteria were engulfed by larger, ancestral animal cells. The aerobic bacteria were not digested by the cells that engulfed them but instead lived within the larger animal cells. This event allowed ancestral animal cells to evolve the capacity to utilize chemical energy in the presence of oxygen.

If this event had not occurred, which organelle would be missing from modern animal cells?

A

Mitochondria.

B

Nucleus.

C

Chloroplasts.

D
