One hypothesis for how life first originated on Earth centers on the composition of the Earth’s early atmosphere. Experiments testing this hypothesis show that under conditions made to simulate this early atmosphere, inorganic compounds in an aqueous solution can spontaneously self-assemble into simple organic molecules such as amino acids in response to energy discharges such as lightning strikes.
