Thyroxine ($\text{T}_{ 4 }$) and triiodothyronine ($\text{T}_{ 3 }$) are hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Both contain iodine, which must be obtained from dietary sources. Children that receive insufficient dietary iodine are often smaller and slow to develop. Adults with dietary iodine deficiencies are overweight, tired, and hypersensitive to cold.
