Mitochondria are partitioned into two discreet volumes, including the intermembrane space and the matrix. This allows the electron transport chain to pump protons from one volume into another to create an electrochemical gradient. That gradient is later used by ATP synthase to produce ATP.

The electron transport chain pumps electrons across the inner membrane in what direction?

A

The electron transport chain pumps protons from the intermembrane space into the matrix.

B

The electron transport chain pumps protons from the matrix into the intermembrane space.
