Post-transcriptional modification is the process in eukaryotic cells where a primary transcript RNA is converted into mature messenger RNA, as shown in the figure below.

After introns are removed, the process includes three major steps: addition of a

, and finally cutting out of introns and splicing of the exons together to form a mature messenger RNA molecule.
