Prions are protein particles that can infect humans and a wide variety of animals. Once prions enter into a new host organism, they induce the native proteins to change their folded shape. This "misfolding" involves increasing the number of beta-pleated sheets and decreasing the number of alpha-helices.

This changes the ____________ structure of the host protein, leading to diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, chronic wasting disease in deer, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
