What does Nick mean when he says this was a “story of the west, after all?”
The story of Gatsby’s great rise and fall is similar to the stories of young men who went west in search of success and fortunes.
All of the main characters, Gatsby, Nick, Daisy and Tom, were Westerners who, ultimately could not adapt to the East and could not stay there.
If Gatsby had fled to the West, as Nick had suggested after the accident, he would still be alive.
The only people who attended Gatsby’s funeral had come from the West.
The scene in Gatsby’s house reminded Nick of school vacations, at his home in the Midwest.
