Why does Gatsby introduce Tom as “The Polo Player” to the other guests at his party?
Gatsby is trying to compliment Tom on his recent success as a polo player.
Gatsby is being sarcastic because Tom is a failed polo player who has not played in years.
Most of Gatsby’s guests are celebrities of some sort, and he does not want Tom to stand out as being, in this gathering a sort of “nobody.”
Gatsby has invited other polo players to the party and is trying to help Tom find someone to talk to.
Gatsby wants everyone to think that Tom is a good friend of his, and to suggest that he, Gatsby, is also a polo player.
