Suppose a duck is bobbing up and down in the water as waves pass by. Another duck, located $3\text{ m}$ away, is also bobbing up and down but is out of phase with the first duck. When one duck is up, the other is down, and vice versa.

It takes $2\text{ s}$ for either duck to bob up and then back down. ​There are no wave crests or troughs located between the ducks, only a single node.
