 What is the Enhanced ACT®?

The Enhanced ACT® is the updated version of the ACT® that launched in 2025. It’s designed to give students a faster, more flexible testing experience—with a shorter format, digital delivery, and new scoring system.

You’ll still be tested in key subjects: English, Math, and Reading. But now, the Science section is optional. Your main composite score is based only on the required three sections. If you do take Science, you’ll also get a separate STEM score that combines your Math and Science results.

The Enhanced ACT® keeps the same 1–36 scoring scale, but the structure and timing are different. That’s why it’s important to use a calculator made just for this version—so your score prediction stays accurate.

How many questions are on the Enhanced ACT®?

The Enhanced ACT® has a total of 144 questions spread across four sections:

• English – 50 questions
• Math – 45 questions
• Reading – 36 questions
• Science – 40 questions

Each correct answer counts toward your raw score—and since there’s no penalty for guessing, it’s always worth answering every question.

How long does the Enhanced ACT® take?

TThe Enhanced ACT® takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete—not including instructions and breaks. It’s shorter than the original version, but still a timed, standardized test that requires focus and pacing.

Here’s the timing breakdown for each section:

• English – 35 minutes
• Math – 50 minutes
• Reading – 40 minutes
• Science (optional) – 40 minutes

Since breaks and setup time are included, be ready to spend around 3 hours total at your test center.

The streamlined format makes the Enhanced ACT® a little less intense—but still a great way to show what you know and get ready for college admissions.

What is the Enhanced ACT® out of?

The Enhanced ACT® still uses a 1–36 scale, just like the original version. But the way your composite score is calculated has changed slightly.

Here’s how it works:

• You’ll get a scale score from 1 to 36 for each required section:
  English, Math, and Reading
• These scores come from your raw scores (the number of questions you got right)
• Your composite score is the average of those three section scores

Let’s say you score:

• English – 29
• Math – 26
• Reading – 31

Your composite score would be: (29 + 26 + 31) ÷ 3 = 28.7 → Rounded to 29

If you take the optional Science section, it won’t affect your composite score. But you’ll also receive a STEM score, which averages your Math and Science scale scores.

So while the format has changed, the Enhanced ACT® still gives you a clear, familiar score range—making it easier to plan for college admissions.

What is a good score?

A “good” Enhanced ACT® score really depends on your goals—but here’s a general guide to help you see where you stand:

• Above 30 – Excellent! You’re in a great spot for competitive colleges.
• 25–29 – Strong score with room to improve even more.
• 20–24 – Around average and a solid foundation to build on.
• Below 20 – No worries! It’s a helpful starting point to guide your prep.
